They sat in Rosa’s room and drank together. Alistair excused themselves fairly quickly. Then Reginald, then Francine. Barcy and Abilene stuck around. Barcy had another bottle of wine for each of them, and by 10 o’clock they were all pretty tipsy. Barcy laid on the floor with her head in Rosa’s lap while Rosa stroked her hair. It was nice to not have to think about leaving. She could get used to this.
Loud and even bass notes punched Jesse’s bones, invigorating them rather than adding to their weariness. Just walking into the North Gate bar district allowed him to enjoy a new frame of mind. One that wasn’t focused on eating a dozen eggs or moving a feather across a room. Now Jesse got to participate in a youth tradition that stretched back centuries among various cultures.

They sat in silence for a while. Rosa sat with the story and wondered what it meant for her. Did Barcy know something that Rosa didn’t? Finally, Barcy let go of her hand and pushed herself up off the floor. “I think it’s time for you to go home,” said Barcy softly.
This is an early scene from “The Inexplicable Phenomena of the Stars”, a story about a magical planetarium, shortly after the main character starts her employment there. This story was written during NaNoWriMo 2019 and features magic, intergalactic conflict, and found families.
When I saw it, I was rooted to the ground in fear. The beast had torn its skin-toned facade away and stood before me. Gray leathery skin wrapped its bulging muscles. Dark hair peppered its body, concentrating most on its arms, chest, and back. It stood on powerful legs, which bent the opposite way of my own. Its naked body bore no genitalia or break of any kind. Just a single unbroken layer of skin and hair until its face.
Firelight (working title) is a novel-length story set in a village-based society that has moved on from myths, creatures, and magic, but hasn’t quite become modern or industrialized, almost frozen in time. Even though most adults in this world consider them to be myths, there are stealthy, shape-shifting creatures that exist called “shifs,” who prey on children throughout their childhoods until they finally feast on them in adulthood. The story revolves around Blake, and this is an excerpt from early on in the story where Blake is about 17 years old.
