This is an early scene from “The Inexplicable Phenomena of the Stars”, a story about a magical planetarium. In this scene, Rosa had just asked Alistair for a job and they turned her down (a plot point that may or may not stay). Barcy just told Rosa the story of how Barcy had come to work there. This story was written during NaNoWriMo 2019 and features magic, intergalactic conflict, and found families. You can find the first excerpt from this story here.
They sat in silence for a while. Rosa sat with the story and wondered what it meant for her. Did Barcy know something that Rosa didn’t? Finally, Barcy let go of her hand and pushed herself up off the floor. “I think it’s time for you to go home,” said Barcy softly. She held out her hand again to help Rosa up. They stood facing each other. Barcy took her other hand. “Take some time to forget about this whole thing. And then come back if you can’t. I’ll see you again. Hopefully.”
Neither moved to leave but they closed the distance between them until they were kissing. Rosa had never been kissed in a way that held so much significance. It was hello and goodbye and see you soon all wrapped up in one. It was brief and it was eternity. Barcy pulled back and squeezed Rosa’s hands before dropping them. Without another word from either of them, she left the room. Rosa stood in the moonlight for a bit longer and then left without turning back.
